Introduction to Soldering (Design and Build a Custom Copper Lamp)

October 23 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Learn the fundamentals of soldering metal by designing and building a one-of-a-kind copper pipe lamp

In this workshop, you’ll build a fully functional lamp that defies placement in any single style. It will be both modern and traditional, vintage and sleek, industrial and chic. Finished with an Edison bulb, it will stand out as a timeless piece in whatever setting it’s placed – on your desk, next to your bed or whatever part of your home that needs a little light and inspiration. It’s the ultimate conversation piece— the one you designed and made yourself.

You’ll create the structure of your lamp using copper pipe and fittings which you’ll solder together using a propane torch. Copper pipe is usually used in building construction and plumbing, but it also serves as a perfect material for making a unique and beautiful lamp.

You’ll begin this workshop designing your lamp. You can base your design on one of the lamps on display in our studio or you can literally start with a blank piece of paper, creating whatever design you find inside your head.

Once you’ve finished your design, our craftspeople will help you build it, using simple hand tools and the all-important element of fire! We’ll teach you how to solder your lamp pieces together, ensure your lamp will be both durable and beautiful.

Next you’ll wire the socket and plug then choose the Edison bulb style that best suits your design. Finally, you’ll “flip the switch”, turning on your masterpiece for the first time!

This is one of our most-loved workshops as it allows you to “follow your bliss”, creating in real life something that only existed previously in your mind.
