Make a Small Table (Introduction to Modern Woodworking)

June 6 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

This workshop introduces guests to modern woodworking through an immersive experience of crafting a small wooden table

Woodworking is an age-old craft and one of the most versatile skills. With some woodworking know-how and the right tools, you can create anything.  Our craftspeople will guide you through the entire process, from selecting, measuring and cutting the wood for your table through its final assembly.  As an introductory workshop, we’ll focus on giving you hands-on experience with manydifferent tools and techniques.

WHAT YOU’LL BE MAKING

This workshop will focus on making a contemporary small oak table suitable for use as a plant stand or side table.  It’s a classic, minimalist style that will fit into any décor. Your table will constructed using half-lap joinery, rather than  nails or screws, giving it great stability and strength despite its small size.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

Guests will start from scratch, learning to measure and cut wood to create the various parts of the table.  In addition to various hand tools, our craftspeople will train you to safely and efficiently operate several power tools, include a mitre saw, a router table, a table saw and a belt sander.  Once all the parts have been crafted, you’ll assemble and perform final finishing tweaks to complete your table.

Craftsman Ave workshops are held in our studio in Gowanus.  Our space is casual and designed to be completely modular so it can be configured in the best way for the discipline, tools and project at hand.  We specialize in Hands-On Workshops where guests make beautiful things in a beautiful place.  Workshops usually start around our work table and are run in a casual, conversational way – you won’t find any PowerPoint slides, florescent overhead lights or anything else vaguely class-like here (though we do have a chalkboard and an old-school pencil sharpener)
