What is upcycling anyway? It’s the process of creatively reusing old or discarded materials to give them new life or purpose. Although the technique has been around for centuries, the term “upcycling” was popularized in the 1990s as growing environmental awareness led to the rise of eco-friendly practices.

Upcycling workshops at Craftsman Ave are your opportunity to flex your creativity and craftsmanship muscles while reducing waste and supporting local business, a win-win-win scenario. More classes are coming soon, so be sure to check back to see what upcycling workshops in Brooklyn you can sign up for!

What’s the difference between upcycling and recycling?

Upcycling involves transforming old or discarded materials into new products with greater artistic or functional value. Some examples: turning old jeans into a handbag, using glass bottles as decorative lamps, or tinkering around with an old gaming system to bring it back to life rather than buying a new one.

Recycling, on the other hand, breaks down materials into its raw components in order to make something new. Some examples here might be melting plastic bottles to make new plastic products, shredding old paper to create recycled paper, and refining used aluminum cans into new ones.
