What To Expect

The oldest surviving woven rug was probably made in Iran about 2500 years ago, and people have been making textile panels for warmth, comfort, and decoration ever since. Hooked rugs became common in the 19th century, but making them was a slow, painstaking process. Modern tufting works in the same way (forming designs by pushing pieces of yarn through a piece of cloth and either cutting them or leaving them as loops), but the tufting gun makes it so much faster and easier, so you can be part of an ancient tradition in a totally modern way.

In our class, you will learn the techniques to create your own custom wall rug. This workshop is designed for beginners but will be just as fun for those with previous tufting experience, who may wish to explore more advanced techniques.

Can I pick my own image or design it?

You can pick your own image if you’d like! You want to focus on images with bold lines, simple shapes, and strong outlines. Avoid intricate details and tiny elements, as they may not translate well to the rug’s texture. Basic patterns, geometric shapes, or simple silhouettes are ideal.

Can I take the piece home the same day?

Yes! Our guides will show you how to apply a backing that will be fully set to bring home the day it’s made.
