What To Expect
The shop is a rustic sanctuary where the air is thick with the scent of hot oil and honest hard work. Under the glow of dancing sparks, seasoned artisans and eager novices alike shape glowing steel into formidable works of art.
The temperature outside is a brisk 64°F. Inside, the roaring forge is pushing 2,000 degrees. You trade your tailored blazer for a well-worn leather apron and step into a world where technology takes a back seat to sheer human grit and imagination. Here, time isn’t tracked by the ticking of a wristwatch — it’s measured by the rhythmic cadence of heavy hammers striking resilient iron. The crackle of the forge cuts through the ambient clatter, creating an intoxicating symphony of creation.
Tonight, the open studio beckons.
Veterans of the craft stand shoulder to shoulder with intrepid beginners, each coaxing their own unique blade out of raw, unyielding stock. There is an unspoken camaraderie in the air — a shared language of steel, scale, and quench tanks. It is a place where you can lose yourself entirely in the meditative dance of shaping a tang and grinding a razor-sharp edge.
Come with a vision or let the evening guide you — work on whatever calls to you within the session’s timeframe. Simple projects can be completed in a single night, while more ambitious blades can be carried across multiple Open Forge Nights, each session building on the last until your vision is realized.
You’ve left your carefully manicured world behind to experience the satisfaction of turning raw, glowing metal into an extension of your own two hands.
It’s rough. It’s loud. It’s utterly unforgettable.

Who can attend?
Open forge night is open to anyone who has taken a Knife forging workshop at Craftsman Ave within the last year and feels comfortable working independently.
This is not a beginner workshop or a step-by-step class.
Are there any studio rules?
Yes — to keep the space safe and enjoyable for everyone:
- No food or alcohol
- No guests or observers
- Please respect shared tools and studio space
- All participants are expected to help clean up during the final 20 minutes of the night
- All projects must leave with you at the end of the session
Do I need to bring my own steel?
Yes, we’ll have a small shared selection of rebar and railroad spikes available, but if you want any other types of steel we suggest purchasing from https://
Please only bring Carbon steels, no stainless steels
What kinds of projects can I work on?
You can work on any project, provided it uses carbon steels or tool steels. Projects that will require more than one night will need to be taken home in between work sessions.
Will there be instruction?
There will be light guidance and troubleshooting available throughout the night, but Open Forge is designed as a self-guided open studio experience rather than a traditional workshop.
What should I bring?
We recommend bringing:
- Your own steel
- Closed toed shoes
- Any specialty supplies such as knife scales etc.
- An idea you’re excited to work on
