What To Expect

The history of music speakers is a fascinating journey from simple telephone devices to the complex and powerful systems we use today. Early speakers, like those invented by Johann Philipp Reis and Alexander Graham Bell in the late 1800s, were used in telephones to produce sound, primarily for communication. The moving coil principle, which is the foundation of modern dynamic speakers, was experimented with by Oliver Lodge in 1898 and later patented by Chester W. Rice and Edward W. Kellogg in 1924. The rise of radio broadcasting in the 1920s and 1930s spurred the development of more powerful and refined speakers, including the iconic Altec Lansing 604 Duplex driver in 1943. Further advancements in materials, manufacturing techniques, and digital audio processing continue to push the boundaries of speaker technology, resulting in the wide variety of speakers we enjoy today.

In this class you’ll bridge the gap between the science of sound and the art of woodworking. You’ll build the cabinet that drives the sound from a tiny speaker into the void of a silent room. You’ll work with drivers, amps, soldering irons and sandpaper to make a portable Bluetooth connected speaker that is as functional at home as it is at the beach or picnics.
