This workshop is designed and taught by Melanie Abrantes, a renowned Bay Area-based producer of handcrafted, heirloom objects. Melanie believes that in order to create something beautiful, you have to get your hands dirty. She founded her company in 2013 when she realized there was a growing American market for handmade goods.
Melanie specializes in using Japanese hand tools to make beautiful things. In this workshop, she’ll introduce you to Japanese Bowl Gouge, Japanese Straight Chisel, carving knife, and Shinto Rasp and show them how to use them to make your bowl.
The workshop starts with a discussion of different wood types, an explanation of the tools you’ll be using, and an overview of the techniques used to cut and shape wood. Once you get comfortable with them, Melanie will guide you as you carve the inside of your bowl with a bowl gouge. Next, she’ll help you design and whittle the outside of your bowl using a straight chisel and a carving knife. Once you’ve shaped your bowl, Melanie will help you put the finishing touches on your masterpiece.
All tools will be provided to use during the workshop, with the option of purchasing the tools at a discounted rate to continue your wood carving adventures at home!
